1. How should Christians process the issue of people who are born intersex?
Exodus 4:11 – “And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the Lord?”
God made people with the various characteristics they have, including the intersex community. Exodus 4:11 mentions some characteristics some of us are born with: mutism, deafness, and blindness. Despite these things, people born with one or more of these issues have ways they can communicate and process the world around them.
The biological traits at issue determine whether or not someone is a boy or girl. In an intersex person, these characteristics are not clear.
2. How should parents handle this issue?
Judges 13:12-14 – [12] “And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass. How shall we order the child, and how shall we do unto him? [13] And the angel of the Lord said unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware. [14] She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.”
When He was asked, God gave the parents of Samson specific instructions on how to raise him. Parents of intersex children must ask the Lord for specific instructions on how to raise their intersex child and then obey those instructions.
3. What role do doctors play in the upbringing of an intersex child?
A doctor is responsible for providing for the medical needs of an intersex child, but it is the responsibility of the parents to raise them.
4. Is it okay for intersex individuals to date and/or marry?
Genesis 2:24-25 – “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. [25] And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.”
After the Lord has given parents their specific instruction on how to raise their intersex child, that child is to date and/or marry someone of the opposite sex.
5. Can a Christian date someone who is intersex?
There are three questions that need to be answered here…
- In the Lord’s eyes, is the intersex person the opposite sex of the Christian interested in them?
- Is the intersex person a Christian? We are counseled not to marry unbelievers. (2 Corinthians 6:14)
- Is the Christian okay with the inherent issues of an intersex relationship? (reduced/no likelihood of having biological children, potential lifelong health issues of the intersex partner, the stigma of dating an intersex person)
If you’ve answered YES to all three questions, then move forward.
6. Why did God make the intersex community, knowing the stress of being intersex is unfathomable?
Matthew 13:27-28 – [27]“So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? [28] He said unto them, An enemy hath done this…”
God made all things very good. (Genesis 1:31), but Satan marred Creation. The marring of humanity by sin produces terrible effects and the stress of being intersex is one of them. The enemy did this, not God.
The intersex community carries a burden that few can understand. The confusion that intersex people experience makes sense. How can you know if you’re a man or woman if you have the characteristics of both sexes? But God is not the Author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). Satan is. As a result, the intersex community has suffered great injury.
But where Satan authored confusion, God authors peace. He gives the parents of intersex children specific instructions on how they should raise them.
He does not exclude the intersex community from fellowship in His church. Rather, He welcomes them and works to restore them in His image like everyone else.
He gives them guidance on how they can live their lives, guidance that will not foster confusion. If they are willing to submit to His guidance, God will give the intersex community peace.
