Not Your “Good Ol’ Fire and Brimstone” Sermon: What the Bible Actually Teaches about the Judgment and Hell

Three years ago, I boosted a post on our Facebook page, stating that the doctrine of eternal torment was not biblical. I made a couple of Bible-based points to make it plain that God would not be angry with sinners forever and the responses were everything you expect them to be.

“Hell is real and it is for ALL ETERNITY. IF YOU DO NOT ACCEPT CHRIST AS UR SAVIOUR AND YOU ARE NOT WASHED IN HIS PRECIOUS BLOOD YOU WILL SPEND ETERNITY IN HELL IN TORMENT. THIS IS THE TRUTH READ YOUR BIBLE.”

“Heaven is real Hell is real…don’t be deceive!”

“This article is heresy and is incredibly Biblically incorrect. Whoever wrote this needs to do some serious homework”

Our Facebook ads were hacked, as well. The image we used for that post (below right) was put on our ads and people were terrified. “Who wouldn’t be?”, you would say. But the real question is “Who hasn’t been?” This teaching has terrified the world for 1,500+ years and the fruits of it are embittering.

Our hacked ad and some of the comments. One of the comments
was actually, “oh no no no no”.

Whether or not many Christians will admit it, this teaching has made them scared of Jesus returning. The idea of our Savior showing a side of Himself that makes the devil look like the good guy has left many with no desire to see or labor to hasten Jesus’ return. They are too afraid.

Others embrace this teaching as gospel. “Good ol’ fire and brimstone” sermons, protestors’ signs, and Facebook comments threatening eternal torment to unbelievers are commonplace today. They actually look forward to seeing the wicked allegedly writhe in agony for eternity.

But what the Bible teaches about the Judgment and Hell is entirely different from what you’ve heard for the past 1,500+ years. We’ve studied it out and put together several simple studies for you to see the truth for yourself, using questions one would encounter when discussing this topic with others.

If you or someone you know has ever been (or still are) fearful of the Judgment, these are the studies for you. Please study them prayerfully and if you have any questions, please reach out to me. I’m happy to help.
